Mu Alpha Theta

Mu Alpha Theta is dedicated to inspiring keen interest in mathematics, developing strong scholarship in the subject, and promoting the enjoyment of mathematics among high school and two-year college students. The name Mu Alpha Theta was constructed from the Greek lettering for the phonemes m, a, and th.

Mu Alpha Theta was founded as The Mu Alpha Theta National High School and Junior College Mathematics Club in 1957 by Dr. Richard V. Andree at the University of Oklahoma to promote scholarship in mathematics and establish mathematics as an integral part of high school and junior college education. Pi Mu Epsilon, the National Collegiate Honor Society of Mathematics, contributed funds for the organization's initial expenses, and the University of Oklahoma provided space, clerical help, and technical assistance. The Mathematical Association of America, a primary sponsor of the organization since 1958, and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics nominated the first officers and Board of Governors. At present, Mu Alpha Theta is comprised of over 65,000 students in more than 1400 chapters at schools across the country.

As required by the National Office, the Harding chapter will be regulated by a constitution and will have regular meetings throughout the school year. The chapter will participate actively in the life of the school and will not merely consider itself an honor society.
