Harding Academy believes that all students, being made in the image of God, have an innate desire to create. Art students are encouraged and equipped to express themselves through drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, pottery and digital imagery. Our program is discipline-based, meaning that the four disciplines of art education are the focus of our lessons. These include art production, art history, aesthetics, and art criticism.
All students in the seventh grade take art for five weeks and have the option of taking nine weeks of Art in the eighth grade. High school students may take Art I, II, III and IV. The Art I classes are taught by Debbie Litton Cummings and fulfill the high school requirement of one fine arts credit. This class also helps the students to decide whether he or she might like to pursue art as an area of emphasis during their high school years. Art II, III, and IV classes are taught by Stacey Knouff Smith and offer the student a chance to further develop their skills, create a portfolio for college presentation and receive education about various art and art-related careers.
