Our fifth grade students had a wonderful trip to the state capital last week. They toured the capitol building and visited the old Tennessee Supreme Court building where they learned some of the history of our state. Next they visited the room where the state senate meets and learned a bit about how laws are made. The guide emphasized the transparency that is considered a hallmark of our Tennessee legislature.
They had a chance to visit with Representative Mark White, a Harding alum, and actually complete a mock debate about a homework bill suggested by student, Amelia Terry. After debate about the bill, they had a mock vote. Each student was able to press the aye or nay button to cast a vote. This memory will live on for years to come. They lunched at a local restaurant; then headed to the Hermitage. This trip provided a wonderful opportunity for the students to explore and reflect on the history and government of our state.
