50th Reunion of the First Graduating Class of Harding Academy of Memphis
By: Victor Boone
Carolyn Welch Hladky, literally, took the bull by the horns and ran with it, to mix metaphors. She contacted all the contactable members of the classes of 1959, the class of 1960, and the class which would have been the class of 1958 (former Memphis Christian School students) if Harding College had taken over Memphis Christian School earlier. Email invitations were sent out for the reunion to be held on Saturday afternoon, May 16th, in the Alumni Room of the Cherry Road Harding Academy of Memphis campus.

Just 2 campers shy of a sold out program, Camp Invention at Harding Cordova was a huge success. There were 108 campers armed with broken appliances, recyclables, and lots of out-of-the-box creativity. Our teachers went out of their way to make the curriculum come alive. Students learned about simple machines and made ping pong ball catapults; they performed experiments with the basic principals of flight; they went on a Viking treasure trek, threw hundreds of water balloons, and more. Counselors worked very hard to keep every child engaged. This high energy week ended with an INVENTORS SHOWCASE: a family assembly with cheers, a slide show, and open house.

The Three Piggy Opera
Harding Academy’s second grade classes performed a lively version of the “Three Piggy Opera”. Students sang and acted out scenes from the familiar childhood story. The musical drama included visits from several little pigs, mama and papa pigs, peddlers, and even the Big Bad Wolf! It was obvious that the students and their families enjoyed the show from the overture to the finale. The performance was successful for all three second grade classes and promises to continue as an annual tradition.View pictures from the performances

Christmas Cheer Downtown
You know the Christmas season is here when the A cappella makes their annual holiday trip to First Tennessee Bank and The Peabody hotel. The acoustics were wonderful! The bank employees and hotel guests thoroughly enjoyed hearing the chorus under the direction of Dan Burdette. Selections included Carol of the Bells, Hallelujah Chorus, The First Noel, Mary Did You Know, In the First Light, and several other favorites, for about a 30-45 minute presentation at each location. Mr. Burdette got a fantastic surprise at the Peabody as Opera singer, Kathleen Battle, introduced herself to Dan and the group in between songs. She complimented their performance and their presentation of the Hallelujah Chorus. At the end of their time at the Peabody, a hotel guest said, "Now this is what Christmas is all about!"view pictures from the downtown performances

A team of English teachers from each state judged the writing. Harding Academy is one of only six Tennessee schools to have a winning writer, Katie Walker. In addition, the Harding Academy English Department has also received a commendation from the National Council of Teachers of English for excellence in its instructional program as evidenced by the high quality of writing of its students.

Now through our secure website, members of the Harding family can support the mission and students of the school by giving online via credit card or e-check. "Every gift makes a difference at Harding Academy. With many people no longer carrying checkbooks and more people choosing each year the conveniences of online shopping and online philanthropy, we feel it is important to make online giving available to our alumni, current parents, grandparents, past parents, faculty, staff, and friends," said Philip Cummings, the school's Director of Development. To make an online donation or visit our secure giving site, click here

Introduces Debit Card
Lunchroom Program
Harding Cordova is updating the cafeteria for the 2008-09 school year. Students participating in the Sodexo lunch program are now using a debit card system. They love having their own cards and are excited to be on the same operation program used by the high school. Cathy Gatewood, the lunchroom manager, feels the new method of handling lunch money will help control lost lunch coupons and allow the lunch lines to move more quickly. This is an exciting change for our Cordova students.
Class of 2009 Kicks off the
new school year with
the Sr. Picnic
On August 5, the class of 2009 celebrated the beginning of their senior year with a picnic. They enjoyed a delicious dinner of BBQ and all the trimmings. The seniors participated in a Harding tradition and painted their handprints on the wall leading to the senior hallway. After this, the class received their banner, designed and presented by their parents. It will hang across the hall from the handprints, and includes the class Bible verse and each senior's name. This was an exciting event for all the seniors, and was a perfect way to kick off the new year.

Harding Cordova Hosts
Camp Invention
Harding Academy hosted Camp Invention for the first time at the Cordova location June 16-20 and it was a child inventor's dream! Pictured are Gibson Steed and Noah Heaton taking apart hard drives. 80 campers plus a staff of 18 worked constantly to ensure these creative minds were put to work with landing on a planet and planet survival, designing cars that can house eggs and keep them from breaking in a crash, creating amusement park rides, and taking apart non-working household appliances to create new inventions. What more could an inventor ask for? Plans are already underway for Summer 2009.see more pictures from the Camp
